I have seen a lot of ridiculous, offensive, and hypocritical anti-abortion propaganda in my time, but I do believe that this one takes the metaphorical cake. I am not entirely sure where to begin, but I will attempt to explain all of the things that are wrong here. Time for a history lesson.

First off, anyone who openly questioned the Nazis during World War II was killed. Period. If you were a German citizen at that time, you did not talk about your political opinions to anybody, because anybody could be an informant. I will make an attempt to further emphasize this point by adding in a personal story. My father once attended a church service where whoever was preaching decided to go off on a tangent about how German citizens should have done the good, Christian thing and spoken out against Hitler. A man in the congregation stood up, laughed, and told the priest that “with all due respect, if they had done that, they would be dead”. This man actually wrote a book, which I have read, entitled Hitler’s Willing Warrior. It is a more or less autobiographical account of this man’s experience as a young man in Germany who expressed his political opinions and was imprisoned and tortured as a result. I would highly recommend it to anyone who takes this graphic seriously.

Secondly, a good number of the Nazis who were committing the atrocities of the Holocaust were Christians. Therefore, if anyone had actually been stupid enough to try to use signs to protest the Nazis, it wouldn’t have been Christians, because they often were the Nazis. And, again, those probably-not-Christians would have been brutally tortured and/or killed.

Now, I will address the point where this graphic completely lost all possible credibility. This may come as a shock to anyone who never took high school history, but the majority of German citizens did not know much (if anything at all) about what exactly was going on in concentration camps until after the Allies showed up and started releasing information. The images like the one that this offensive statement is so tastelessly plastered over were not available to be made into signs for people with death wishes until it was too late for millions Jews, other minorities, and prisoners of war.

The use of this image really sickens me, as it highlights exactly why abortion and the Holocaust have absolutely nothing to do with each other, by exploiting the images of innocent people, most or all of whom probably died miserable deaths. These are living, sentient people. They are starving. They are probably cold. They are in pain. They do not look very happy. They can feel every single horrible thing that happens to them. They can see the people around them dying or being killed. They can physically dig their own graves (which many of them did have to do), and they can feel the dread of knowing what’s coming.

A fetus, on the other hand, feels nothing, sees nothing, thinks nothing, and is probably pretty well-fed, since it is taking nutrients from the body of a woman who may or may not want it there. Millions of people died in the Holocaust; people who had friends, families, lives, jobs, and futures before the Nazis (who, again, were often Christians as well) decided that they did not deserve those things. These people suffered, and felt every bit of the pain. They experienced horrible things that the person who made this graphic can not begin to imagine. I probably cannot begin to imagine many of them. And someone still had the nerve to compare this widespread, almost unimaginable suffering to a medical procedure that terminates a non-sentient, not-yet-developed fetus.

After taking a moment to compose myself after nearly being crushed under the weight of the ignorance and hate that this image represents, I will circle back to my first point. Given all the things I have pointed out, and the fact that this graphic claims the people on the ‘right side of history’ (meaning those who believe in the misguided pro-‘life’ movement) should have held up signs protesting the Holocaust, then I can only conclude that the message here is that all pro-‘lifers’ should be captured, tortured, and murdered, because that is exactly what would have happened if they had tried to do what they think is ‘right’.

All the creator of this graphic has done is single-handedly proven what is wrong with the pro-‘life’ movement. Nothing is sacred to them. They will twist every tragedy, every death, every historical disaster, and every situation to try to force their views on others. They care nothing for the victims of these tragedies, just like they care nothing for the women who are incubating their precious fetuses. It sickens me to think how many people there are in the world who might not see anything wrong with this image.

Regardless of how you feel about abortion, if you have a single ounce of empathy for others or a single regard for the mass suffering of the Jews during the Holocaust, this image should make you feel sick. You should feel physically unclean after viewing it and pondering its implications. If you truly do not see anything wrong with this graphic, I fear that humanity has lost its way.
